Seeds for plenty November 11th 2023

rambutan fruit and seed

Since the rambutan cuttings didn't work I have been eating rambutan in order to get some seed. There's a lot of rambutans around at the moment fortunately.

When I eat the rambutan I keep the seed for about two days until it feels dry and then plant it. Like a lot of seeds here it needs to be planted just under the surface of the soil.

I've also been eating durian and this morning planted four seeds in a similar way. Although some people suggest putting them on top of the soil because that is how they naturally grow. When I did that they looked so exposed, and as I don't trust the birds not to come and gobble them up I have put a sprinkling of earth on top of them. Just so they aren't so obvious.

I thought the seeds were very small compared to many durian seeds I have seen. But nowadays durian trees are bred to produce fruit with small seeds, so it could be that this variety needs to be propagated with cuttings rather than seed. Lets see, I should know by next weekend as they usually start growing very quickly after being planted.

I love how a lot more things seem to be growing in the nursery now - like this ginger. It started with just one or two new shoots which are now growing well. As well as continuing to put out more shoots.

Today I also found out today that the sweet potatoes we got from the market had not grown but turned into a pink soggy mass in the soil.

So I'm extremely pleased with the cuttings we got from Liyana that have sprung into life and started growing very quickly.
