WORKING TOGETHER SECOND WEEK IN FEBRUARY

two volunteers planting basil seedlings

This morning we had a group of Bala's yoga students come in to do a session of Karma Yoga which is part of his yoga course. They all worked together really well (obviously Bala is teaching them well!) and got a lot of work completed. In this picture they are planting half a bed of basil plants. Now that the temperature has started to go up they should grow really well.

As is usual on a Saturday we also had a lot of other volunteers come so the whole garden felt full of a very positive and work focused energy.

After several people working on it for the last week the New Horizon garden is at last almost cleared. It suddenly looked much more cleared today after most of the trees had been cut down. I was talking to Rajan about it and we both think that it is going to be quite an effort to get out the roots of the trees and big bushes that had to be cut down.

The work in this area has been quicker than expected because we have had TWO people with two grass cutters cutting grass at the same time. I have, however, found it very difficult to get a picture of them both working together! I would hear the two grass cutters working and was usually too busy with something else to go and take pictures of them immediately. By the time I did get there, usually one of them had to put the cutter down and do something else like chop down a large bush or tree before starting the grass cutter again.

One day, however, I did manage it but only after they had moved on to a new area in the cashew orchard which starts in front of the volunteer cabins. They were making fast work of cutting this grass when I photographed them.

While doing that I noticed that the nearby cashew tree was just coming into flower.

In the next two weeks or so they will flower. Probably finishing at the end of February just before the hot weather starts. Then we can expect to harvest the cashews during May in the middle of the hot season.
